On Wednesday July 22, Mavis will be honored with the second annual Woody Guthrie Prize at the The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles.
The prize is given annually to the artist who best exemplifies the spirit and life work of Woody Guthrie by speaking for the less fortunate through music, film, literature, dance or other art forms and serving as a positive force for social change in America.
“Mavis Staples’ strong, beautiful voice energized a movement that changed our world. We are honored to award the Second Annual Woody Guthrie Prize to Ms. Staples in recognition of her work alongside her family and her continued work as an incredible solo artist,” said Deana McCloud, Woody Guthrie Center Executive Director.
