L.A.'s Silversun Pickups are taking the world by storm. Since the release of their debut EP, 2005's Pikul, the band has steadily built a loyal international fanbase. Their sound draws from the best of 90s alt. rock, combining it with classic influences like The Velvet Underground, to create something fresh and exciting. And with the release of their second full-length, Swoon, SSPU are ready to take things up another notch.
Swoon has already been hailed as one of the rock albums of 2009. The songs are taut, embellished in places with string arrangements that appear like a drizzle of mercury over the SSPU's trademark distorted density. The band's music acts as a shadow to frontman Brian Aubert’s lyrics, with the arrangements being pulled on a chain by his every vocal whim. His words narrate personal traumas, as though they could be commentary on headlines of any day’s newspaper. As a whole, Swoon is a tapestry of beauty and aggression.
