The Young Knives - drummer Oliver Askew, singer/ guitarist Henry Dartnall and his brother The House Of Lords (we don’t know, don’t ask!) - formed in rocktastic Ashby-de-la-Zouch nine years ago. The most unlikely-looking indie band you'll ever see, The Young Knives are a quirky trio of studenty types who bring to mind the heyday of Parklife-era Britpop and Gang Of Four.

The Young Knives is a great name, who thought of it? “It came from a Scottish history book,” says The House Of Lords. “I misread an etching that had three young chaps pulling a laird from his horse. It actually said 'young knaves', but knives was a good approximation.”

The first track, 'She's Attracted To' contains a wonderfully solid bass line which propels the whole thing along, and guitars are whipped straight from the world of Wire. Then of course there's the off kilter lyrics of The Young Knives delivered in the brothers Dartnell's weirdly yelped manner.

'She's Attracted To' tells the tale of a scrutinised boyfriend, back to the wall, writhing under the unnerving, hawk eyes of his girlfriend's parents who are only too quick to warn her off him - a situation, surely, we can all identify with. Witty observations, totally British and climaxing in a frenzied final chorus ('you were screaming at your mum, I was punching your dad') all mark another landmark release from The Knives.

The Young Knives sing of contemporary British life, spiking the prosaic with the poetic and the plain peculiar. Sharp. If you haven't discovered the coolest band around, then you need to seek this out!
