Party’s indie-dance” Mixmag

They took their name from the legendary special move from arcade game Street
fighter and just like their namesake, Hadouken! have been blowing up all over
the world. The Leeds 5 piece is set to explode their energetic sound
across Australia in August.
Their unique brand of nu-rave/grime has propelled them the forefront of the
UK scene in a little over 12 months. Hadouken! are a band that came out of
nowhere, but refused to be ignored creating new youth anthems “That Boy That
Girl” and “Get Smashed Gate Crash”. Hadouken! construct a brand of high energy
rap fuelled dance music that screams through your stereo and slams you against
the back wall.
Hadouken! are a blitz of UK youth culture’s high speed neon savagery. With
lyrics about binge drinking, relationships, debts, parties and love are not
meant for the faint hearted or the over 30’s. Their crass themes mashed with
gritty gameboy inspired sounds have resonated with a generation across the UK
and online. Hadouken! has attracted almost 5 million hits to their MySpace alone
making them easily one of the biggest buzz bands around.
The group formed in 2006 when former grime producer James Smith called upon
his girlfriend Alice Spooner, Chris Purcell and brothers Nick and Dan Rice. They
joke that Hadouken! is a band of two brothers, two lovers and a guy named
Chris.
By 2007 they had begun the gain more recognition when they received airplay
from BBC 1 guest programmer Mike Skinner of the Streets. NME has described them
as “a savage, snarling work of genius”. 2008 has seen an appearance on a Kitsune
Maison compilation and the band booked to play festivals like Summersonic
(Japan) and Reading.
Australian audiences will get a chance to witness the Hadouken! phenomenon
themselves with Hadouken! tour Australia for the first time in August in support
of their debut album “Music for an Accelerated Culture”.
